If we, as teachers, realize that all of these things that make us so diverse are good things and can be strengths (assets) on which we can build, we have taken the first step to being culturally relevant teachers.
We cannot control where they start, but we are in control of how they leave us at the end of the school year.

ReplyDeleteEach year I need to mentally inventory each students's strengths. I mean, physically list them on paper. This will help me to see their "quirks" in a more positive light, and that will help me to see them as achievers rather than make excuses for their deficits.
